Marie Brown

Gulf Coast

Marie Brown- author, poet, spoken word artist, song writer and former paid spokesperson for Houston Metro-Ride. In 2018, her commercials appeared on ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox networks, local radio voice overs and websites. Marie was born in San Antonio, Texas. She moved to Houston, Texas to attend Texas Southern University. There she began poetry performance as a member of the Texas Southern University Debate Team directed by Dr. Thomas F. Freemen. Marie was the first woman of color to serve on Houston’s Inaugural Poetry Slam Team in 2002. The team accomplished semi-final status. In 2003, Marie released her debut spoken word album, “Ruby Do Hair”. 2005, her second spoken word album was released, “Home Grown”. Marie Brown became the first woman champion to win the National Blue Bonnet Poetry Slam Competition in 2007. “Ready or Not” was the title of her 3rd spoken word album / DVD released in 2009. Marie volunteered as a coach and mentor to the N.A.A.C.P. Act-So Poetry, (2006-2013). Marie was the curator of the “Ruby Do Hair Art Exhibition” in 2011. This exhibition included local Houston Artists’ interpretation to a variety of diverse cultural art forms. “Ruby Do Hair Art Exhibition” toured the Carver Cultural Art Gallery in San Antonio, Texas and the Houston Community College East Campus- The Felix Morales Art Gallery. These exhibitions and her release album concerts have donated proceeds to the Santa Maria Women Shelter in Houston, Texas, the Texas Families Against Violence in San Antonio, Texas and the Grip Organization in South Africa, which provide aid to individuals living with HIV. 2023, Marie was 1 of 10 recipients of the Martin Luther King, I Have a Dream Scholarship Award at Texas Southern University. Marie enjoys spending time with her children, grandchildren, close friends and family.
